A detailed map of the conference venue, including room numbers, will be provided to participants shortly before the conference.
Accessibility: The main room of the conference is on the ground floor. Rooms for discussion sessions and parallel sessions are on the first floor of the same building. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of the building (it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the building does not feature an elevator. We apologize for this inconvenience. Please contact us in advance if you need assistance in accessing the first floor.
The historic city of Bamberg attracts many visitors, which is why there are lots of lovely hotels surrounding the conference location.
Below, we provide a small selection of hotels that provide reduced fees for conference participants. Codes to book the reduced fees will be made available to participants after registration. Charming and potentially cheaper alternatives are also available on Booking.com or Airbnb.
The following map shows the conference location as a yellow star and accommodations in pink. Open map in a separate window.

By Train
Bamberg is located on one of Germany’s main train lines, between Berlin and Munich. If you wish to book a train to Bamberg, visit the website of the German National Railway, and enter “Bamberg” into the form on the top of the page.
To get from the train station to the conference location, you can either walk (15-20 minutes, 1.3 km), take a bus, or take a cab. Busses are not substantially faster than walking, though. To find a bus connection, it is easiest to use Google Maps. If your railway ticket says “+ CITY”, you will be able to use the busses for free. Otherwise, you can buy a bus ticket from the driver. Cabs are waiting in front of the train station and will charge €10-15 to get to the conference location.
By Plane
When traveling by plane, there are three airports to choose from.
Nürnberg Airport (NUE)
This airport is closet to Bamberg and easy to fly to from major cities in Europe.
It takes about one hour to get from the airport to Bamberg by train (13 minutes to get to Nürnberg train station by subway, plus 35-42 minutes to get to Bamberg by train). To book a train, visit the website of the German National Railway, and enter “NUE Nürnberg Airport” and “Bamberg” into the form at the top of the page. Do not use Google Maps to find connections as it doesn’t find the right train connections for some reason. When booking a ticket in advance, make sure to book the “Flexpreis” option as it will allow you to take any train connection whatsoever at any time of the day, in case of delays.
It is also possible to take a cab from the airport to Bamberg, though it will usually not be much faster and charge about €100.
Munich Airport (MUC)
Munich Airport is the recommended option for those who fly in from overseas. There is a very good train connection to Bamberg, and the conference also offers a bus shuttle service on Monday and Saturday. In case flights are unusually expensive due to the Oktoberfest, check Frankfurt Airport, described below.
The train from Munich Airport to Bamberg takes about 2 hours and 37 minutes, though some connections are a bit slower. To book a train, visit the website of the German National Railway, and enter “Munich Airport T” and “Bamberg” in the form on the top of the page. The “T” stands for “Terminal”; there is one subway entrance that is easily accessible from all three terminals (right next to the exits). When booking a ticket in advance, make sure to book the “Flexpreis” option as it will allow you to take any train connection whatsoever at any time of the day, in case of delays.
Alternatively, you can make use of bus shuttle opportunities that the conference offers at two (fixed) times: a bus from Munich to Bamberg on Monday evening (as part of the ride back from the excursion) and a bus to Munich Airport on Saturday morning.
The bus from Munich leaves Munich city centre on Monday, September 30, 6:00 pm. If you would like to join the excursion in full, there will be an opportunity to store your luggage in the bus for the day. If you would like to join the afternoon part of the excursion, you will have to find a place to store your luggage elsewhere until departure. Please note that you will need to book a seat on this bus as part of the conference registration, if you would like to use it (it’s included in the excursion, if you would like to joint it!).
The bus to Munich Airport will leave Bamberg city centre on Saturday, October 5, at 9:00 am. It will arrive at Munich Airport around 11:30 to 11:45 am. The bus will not go to Munich city centre, though there is a good subway connection. If taking this bus, please plan in a bit of buffer time in case of delays due to traffic. Please note that you will need to book a seat on this bus as part of the conference registration, if you would like to use it.
Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
A third option is to fly to Frankfurt Airport. Most trains from Frankfurt Airport to Bamberg also only take about 2 hours and 30 minutes, though you have to switch to a local train for about an hour as part of most connections. To book a train, visit the website of the German National Railway, and enter “FRA Frankfurt Airport” and “Bamberg” in the form at the top of the page. Local trains are fine, though they get a bit crowded around end-of-work hours (5-7pm). When booking a ticket in advance, make sure to book the “Flexpreis” option as it will allow you to take any train connection whatsoever at any time of the day, in case of delays.
By Car
If traveling by car, the most difficult problem is to find a parking space in the city centre. A very central but also very expensive option is this underground garage (€30 per full day). This one is almost as good but a bit cheaper (€18 per full day). Some hotels also have places to park. And if you don’t mind a walk, there is lots of free parking in the residential areas outside of the city centre (you can park by the side of the street).
Models of Consciousness 5 is devoted to connecting researchers both on a professional and personal level. This is why we have created an exciting social programme for participants to join.
Full details of the social programme (times, exact locations, etc.) will be provided here in advance of the conference. For a quick overview, please refer to the description of the social programme on the conference’s Main Page.
The social programme comprises the following elements. Please note that dates and times might still be subject to change.
▸ Excursion
Monday, September 30
Guided tour of the German Museum of Masterpieces of Science and Technology in Munich + visit of the iconic Oktoberfest in Munich, or visit of the famous Pinakothek der Moderne museum of modern art.
There is a bus to take participants from Bamberg to Munich and back. The bus will leave Bamberg at 8:30 am, and Erlangen at 9:00 am, on Monday, September 30. The return trip to Erlangen and Bamberg will leave Munich central city at 6:00 pm. The exact pickup locations will be announced shortly.
Participants who are travelling by Munich can join the excursion in Munich (approximately 10:30 am) and use the conference bus to travel back to Bamberg, including luggage. Those who can’t make it to the excursion can join the return bus at 6:00 pm to travel to Bamberg as well. Please note that in this case, you need to book the return bus as part of the conference registration.
The fee for the excursion (regular: €60, students: €40) covers travel, entrance to the Museums, and guided tours. There is no entrance fee for the Oktoberfest. The excursion fee does not cover food or beverages in Munich.
▸ Conference Dinner
Wednesday, October 2
The conference dinner will take place in one of Bamberg’s most romantic restaurants, located within the historic Michaelsberg Abbey up on Michaelsberg hill. The restaurant has been selected to feature both haut cuisine and affordable options for students.
Please note that the conference dinner requires registration. We have opted for payment in-person on site to allow everyone to choose a dish that suits their own budget. Dishes range from €40+ meat or fish options to €10-15 pasta or pizza options.
▸ Special Evening Event
Tuesday, October 1
The conference will feature a special evening event
Consciousness of Artificial Intelligence
that is open to the general public to join. Details will be announced soon.
▸ Socializing
All other days
Outside of conference activities, Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and once centre of the Holy Roman Empire, offers a host of opportunities for cultural and socializing activities, including guided city tours (also in the evening), culinary experiences or a famous symphony orchestra. A range of options, and opportunities to make reservations for those interested, will be made available here shortly before the conference.
