Product Research Methodology: Our Process

Our team at Sleep Foundation conducts extensive hands-on tests for each mattress to provide you with the most reliable, data-driven recommendations and reviews. Below are key guidelines that inform our testing methodology:

  1. Our testers lie on the surface of each mattress to evaluate factors such as contouring and support. We also use specialized tools to measure performance criteria like pressure relief, heat retention, and motion isolation.
  2. We test each mattress using various sleep positions to observe whether a mattress is better suited for side, back, or stomach sleeping. We roll around the surface and sit on the edges to gauge ease of movement and perimeter support.
  3. We have tested hundreds of mattresses and bring years of experience in the mattress industry to the test lab. Our testing team covers a wide range of sleep preferences, sleep positions, and body types. This helps us represent as many sleeper types as possible in our reviews.

The Simmons Bedding Company includes recognizable brands such as Beautyrest, Serta, and Tuft & Needle. Like its sister companies, Simmons has its own retail website, and its mattresses are also sold at various physical stores throughout the U.S.

Simmons offers three mattress models: Plush, Medium, and Firm. The Plush and Medium models come in memory foam and hybrid options, while the Firm model is only available as a memory foam mattress.

The Plush Mattress offers ample cushioning that may appeal to those who need additional pressure relief. The Firm Mattress is tailored more to stomach and back sleepers, or anyone who prefers a sturdier feel.

Simmons’ best-selling model is the Medium Mattress, which accommodates a range of sleepers. The all-foam mattress combines memory foam and polyfoam layers and has a medium soft (4) feel. The slightly firmer hybrid also has a memory foam comfort system but uses pocketed coils for the support core. The hybrid rates as a medium (5) on the 10-point firmness scale. Both models have 10-inch profiles and a cooling polyester cover.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about the Medium Mattress, including its materials, pricing, warranty, and how to care for it. We’ll also compare the feel and performance of the two models so you can decide which is the best mattress for you.

The Simmons Medium Mattress is available in two models. The memory foam version has a medium soft (4) feel, while the hybrid has a medium (5) firmness level. Personal preference, body weight, and sleep position can help you choose the best mattress firmness for your needs.

  • Choose Medium Soft if… you enjoy a closely contouring mattress that provides generous cushioning. The Simmons Medium’s notable sinkage eases pressure points for side sleepers and people under 130 pounds. The thick comfort layers also help alleviate tension for those with sore muscles and stiff joints.
  • Choose Medium if… you like a combination of cradling and bounce. This mattress’ plush memory foam relieves pressure buildup, while the pocketed coil core prevents sleepers from sinking excessively. We found that the medium feel balances contouring and support for most sleepers up to 230 pounds.

Side Sleepers

The best mattress for side sleepers is generally a medium soft to medium mattress with substantial cushioning. Both Simmons Medium models fall into this firmness range and performed well for the majority of our side sleepers.

Plush memory foam cradles the body and alleviates tension along the spine. The comfort system permits enough sinkage to ease pressure points at the hips and shoulders without distorting spinal alignment.

The hybrid delivers an ideal balance of cushioning and support for side sleepers in any weight bracket. The all-foam mattress also reinforces good spine alignment for side sleepers under 230 pounds, but deep sinkage could be an issue for those over 230 pounds. These sleepers may feel more supported on the sturdier hybrid.

Back Sleepers

A medium firm mattress usually works best for back sleepers, as they need just moderate contouring to align the spine. We found that performance on the Simmons Medium Mattress for back sleepers is mixed, depending on firmness level and sleeper body weight.

The hybrid is a better choice for back sleepers overall, as its medium (5) feel supports the lumbar region while cushioning the shoulders and legs. However, back sleepers over 230 pounds may experience deep sinkage below the torso area, causing the spine to curve uncomfortably. The best mattresses for heavy sleepers are generally firmer than either of these two models.

Since the memory foam model is softer than the hybrid, the support may be inadequate for back sleepers over 130 pounds. The polyfoam support core isn’t as sturdy as steel coils, so excess sagging may occur below the midsection. That said, the medium soft feel on the memory foam model will likely strike the right balance of contouring and support for back sleepers under 130 pounds since they don’t sink into a mattress as much.

Stomach Sleepers

Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers usually require a firmer mattress to keep the spine level. This means that the sturdier hybrid is better equipped to support the majority of stomach sleepers. Robust steel coils prevent the midsection from dipping too low, minimizing strain on the lower back. However, stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may find they sink uncomfortably below the midsection, which can throw off spine alignment.

Our in-house testing showed that the memory foam mattress worked best for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. Because these sleepers don’t sink as much, they get a good amount of cushioning while still feeling supported in the midsection. Stomach sleepers over 130 pounds will sink in more deeply, which may lead to aches and pains the next morning.

Mattress Performance

In addition to the hands-on feedback from our team, we conduct a number of quantitative tests in ourTest Lab. The below ratings are based on the experience of our testers.

Motion Isolation

7.5/10

Foam: 8 / 10

Hybrid: 6 / 10

Our tests showed that the Medium Mattress isolates motion well, thanks to its thick memory foam comfort layers. Memory foam absorbs motion, so movement on one side of the bed shouldn’t be felt much on the opposite end. This makes the Simmons Medium a good choice for co-sleepers and those who easily awaken during the night.

The all-foam model outperforms the hybrid in this category. The hybrid’s pocketed coils do permit easier movement, but this also means that couples are more likely to notice when their partner adjusts positions.

Pressure Relief

7/10

Foam: 8 / 10

Hybrid: 6 / 10

By cradling the body, this mattress’ memory foam comfort system relieves significant pressure buildup. With its middle-of-the-road firmness level options, the Simmons Medium allowed most sleepers on our team to sink comfortably into the memory foam. A firm support core helps to spread body weight evenly across the mattress.

All-foam mattresses generally provide better pressure relief than hybrid models, and this is true for the Simmons Medium as well. The all-foam model’s softer and thicker comfort system delivers more cushioning to potential pressure points.

That said, the hybrid will likely provide a better balance of support and pressure relief for those weighing over 230 pounds, as well as back and stomach sleepers.

Temperature Control

4/10

Foam: 4 / 10

Hybrid: 8 / 10

The two models diverge the most when it comes to temperature control. While the all-foam model includes gel infusions and a cooling cover to help dissipate heat, its closer contour can increase body temperature. Additionally, the solid polyfoam core also isn’t as ventilated as a coil core would be.

The hybrid, on the other hand, has a responsive surface that permits minimal sinkage and prevents excessive heat buildup. The coil core also allows for more airflow through the mattress, which can help you sleep cool.

Edge Support

5.5/10

Foam: 4 / 10

Hybrid: 6 / 10

Edge support on the Simmons Medium is average, so sleepers shouldn’t have any trouble using the full mattress surface or getting into and out of bed. However, outer surface impressions may become more prominent as the mattress ages.

The hybrid’s perimeter is more robust since it has an overall firmer surface. The coil core also resists weight and pressure better than the polyfoam core of the all-foam model.

Ease of Movement

4/10

Foam: 4 / 10

Hybrid: 6 / 10

Being able to comfortably shift positions on a mattress depends on how responsive it is. The hybrid’s springy coil core facilitates movement more than the all-foam model. The latter’s deeper body-hug can sometimes feel restrictive, especially if you’re a combination sleeper who frequently adjusts positions.

Sleepers who enjoy a swaddling sensation will likely prefer the all-foam model even if it means sacrificing some mobility.

Off-Gassing

5/10

Foam: 4 / 10

Hybrid: 6 / 10

When people talk about a new mattress smell, they’re referring to off-gassing odors. The chemical-like smell comes from the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) inside foam and other synthetic materials. While VOCs aren’t generally considered harmful, the smell can be unpleasant to some.

We found that the Medium Mattress’ off-gassing is pretty standard, with odors typically disappearing within 48 hours of unpacking the mattress. Given its higher foam content, off-gassing is more noticeable on the memory foam model. The odors will likely dissipate more quickly if the mattress is set up in a well-ventilated space.

Simmons Medium Mattress Review Breakdown

The Simmons Medium Mattress comes in two models: memory foam or hybrid. Both versions are 10 inches tall, but they vary in construction and feel. The hybrid is a medium (5) on the 10-point firmness scale, while the memory foam rates as medium soft (4).

Both models feature a Cool Climate polyester cover designed to wick away heat and moisture. The cover is not removable and should only be spot-treated as needed.

The all-foam mattress has a memory foam comfort system that cushions pressure points along the spine, hips, and shoulders. The gel infusions are designed to minimize heat retention, while the transitional memory foam layer helps spread body weight evenly across the mattress and absorb excess motion. The dense polyfoam base promotes good spine alignment by reinforcing the heavier torso area.

The hybrid also uses gel-infused memory foam to provide cushion without trapping too much heat. A pocketed coil core stabilizes the mattress and increases the mattress’ responsiveness, though each spring is encased in fabric to limit motion transfer. Space between coils promotes airflow throughout the mattress.

All of the foams used in Simmons mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, indicating that they are free of formaldehyde, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

Simmons recommends rotating the mattress periodically to promote even wear. The company also suggests using a mattress protector to safeguard against spills and accidents.

Mattress Prices and Sizing

Both versions of the Simmons Medium Mattress have below-average price-points, but the hybrid is an especially good value since it has a more complex construction.

While the Medium Hybrid is more expensive than the Medium Memory Foam Mattress, the difference is pretty negligible. Both versions are suitable for people looking to furnish a guest bedroom without breaking the bank.

The Simmons Medium Mattress is available in all standard sizes, excluding California King. At 10 inches thick, the mattress is considered an average height. The hybrid weighs somewhat more than the memory foam model due to its steel coils.
